INTRODUCTION TO MARKETING

The central idea behind marketing is the idea that a firm or other entity will create something of value to one or more customers who, in turn, are willing to pay enough (or contribute other forms of value) to make the venture worthwhile considering opportunity costs. Value can be created in a number of different ways. Some firms manufacture basic products (e.g., bricks) but provide relatively little value above that. Other firms make products whose tangible value is supplemented by services (e.g., a computer manufacturer provides a computer loaded with software and provides a warranty, technical support, and software updates). It is not necessary for a firm to physically handle a product to add value—e.g., online airline reservation systems add value by (1) compiling information about available flight connections and fares, (2) allowing the customer to buy a ticket, (3) forwarding billing information to the airline, and (4) forwarding reservation information to the customer.
It should be noted that value must be examined from the point of view of the customer. Some customer segments value certain product attributes more than others. A very expensive product—relative to others in the category—may, in fact, represent great value to a particular customer segment because the benefits received are seen as even greater than the sacrifice made (usually in terms of money). Some segments have very unique and specific desires, and may value what—to some individuals—may seem a “lower quality” item—very highly.

Are you amongst the growing number of Americans who is skipping
regular visits to the eye doctor due to the cost of care?

A survey by the Center for Disease Control of over 11,5000 adults over 40 shows that nearly 40% skipped opportunities for regular eye care due to lack of money or insurance coverage.  After age 65, only 23.3% blame lack of insurance for missing their annual eye exams.

Researchers were particularly concerned by the nearly 44% of senior citizens who said they had no need to visit an eye doctor.  “The large proportion of persons aged 65 and over reporting no need as their main reason for not seeking care is of concern because this population has the highest prevalence of visual impairment,” the CDC report says. “A possible reason for this is that older adults might regard impairment as a normal part of aging.”  It appears that other studies have indicated many are unaware of their eye health needs because primary care physicians pay little attention to visual health.The corneas of people with glaucoma seem to exhibit different qualities than those who do not suffer from this condition.

A study out of Paris shows that corneas affected by glaucoma are more likely to become deformed and have less elasticity than healthy corneas.  A study of almost 500 eyes with and without glaucoma showed that glaucomatous eyes were more likely to have a higher corneal resistance factor (CRF) and lower corneal hysteresis (CH) – both signs of poor corneal biomechanics.  These findings were presented at the French Society of Ophthalmology

What’s Become of Adobe FrameMaker?

Up until a couple of years ago, most of my customers
used Adobe FrameMaker to create their technical
documentation. The most common package we
sold was Adobe FrameMaker + QuadralayWebWorks,
from templates through indexing. The most common
conversion we did was MS Word to Adobe FrameMaker.
In fact, I’d say that a good 90% of our technical
documentation business was FrameMaker-based.

I am sad to report that I have seen a precipitous drop in
FrameMaker-based projects over the past few years.
I’d estimate that anywhere from 30-40% of our Frame Maker
business is gone. Instead, more and more customers are
asking us to create content using XML editors, such as
Arbortext and XMetaL. In addition to XML editors, many
of our customers are now using wikis for content creation,
such as Confluence or MediaWiki.

Air India Air Transport Services Ltd, ...

Mumbai: Air India Ltd, which is in the process 
of restructuring its Rs. 18,000 crore debt
will induct strategic investors in two of its
subsidiaries, Air India Engineering Services
Ltd and Air India Air Transport Services Ltd.
being carved out of its engineering and 
ground-handling businesses, a civil aviation
ministry official said.


The two subsidiaries will start operations
by 1 April and strategic investors will be
brought into the companies in due course
said the official, who did not want to be
named. He declined to define a time frame
for the investors to be inducted.

By April, the Indian government will also infuse Rs. 1,200 crore
equity into the carrier. The aviation ministry is preparing the
ground for the Union cabinet to approve an equity infusion of 
Rs. 30,000 crore in Air India over the next 10 years and the airline
will receive Rs. 1,200 crore of this money in April. “This money will
be used to clear dues to oil marketing companies, the Airports
Authority of India and other vendors,” added the official.

He explained that the two subsidiaries will together accommodate
20,000 of the airline’s workforce of around 30,000. Employees will be
transferred without any change to the terms of their service
he said, adding that the subsidiaries would also recruit from the market.

Employment for People with Disabilities

in the United States Remains Dismal

Although employment is a right guaranteed by the UN CRPD and is a building block for inclusion, income, access to resources, health and freedom, it remains an out-of-reach goal for the majority of people with significant disabilities around the world. And, it has not improved since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the US twenty years ago. The US National Council on Disability revealed that the difference in labor market activity rate between those employed with no disabilities versus those with disabilities is large at 57.4% in 2009 and has grown significantly since the passage of the ADA. This report can be found here. Similarly, a 2010 Kessler Foundation/National Organization on Disability study surveyed over 2,000 people with disabilities and no disability across the US. Findings revealed that employment still remains the largest gap between the two groups. A copy of this report can be found here.
